DRUG TESTING
NCAA institutions are dedicated to the idea of fair
and equitable competition as well as the protection of the health
and safety of the student-athlete. In 1990, the NCAA approved
drug testing programs that included random testing in specific
sports year-round and in post-season championships of all
sports. As of 2006, the NCAA included the summer months as a
part of their year-round testing program for all sports (incoming
student-athletes are not subject to summer testing). The NCAA
drug-testing program was created so that no participant has an
artificially-induced advantage, that no participant might be
persuaded to use chemical substances to remain competitive and to
safeguard the health and safety of participants
Pace University is committed to providing a healthy
and safe environment for its student-athletes. As such, in
addition to the NCAA drug testing program, all Pace University
student-athletes will be tested on a random basis throughout the
academic year.
Each academic year, every Pace student-athlete will
be required to sign both the NCAA and Pace University Athletics
drug-testing consent forms in order to be eligible for competition.
If a student-athlete is a minor, the parent or legal guardian will
be required to sign the form on their behalf. Adherence to
both the NCAA and Pace University Athletics drug testing programs
is a pre-requisite for participation in all Pace University
Athletics programs. Thus, while student-athletes are free to not
participate in the drug-testing program, those who refuse to do so
will not be permitted to participate in any varsity athletics
program at Pace University. In addition, refusal to participate
will likely result in the loss of any athletically related
financial aid.
In addition to the list of banned substances, the
NCAA has issued warnings about the use of dietary supplement
products. Because of the lack of regulation in the
production, distribution and sale of these products, the purity is
unknown; some may contain banned substances. Students should check
with athletic trainers, team physician, the strength and
conditioning coach and the Dietary Supplement Resource Exchange
Center (www.drugfreesport.com or toll
-free 877/202-0769) before taking any of these products.
Further, the use of tobacco products is prohibited
for coaches, game officials and student-athletes in all sports
during practice and competition. A student-athlete who uses
tobacco products during practice or competition is automatically
disqualified for the remainder of practice or game.
