PACE ATHELTICS ANNOUNCES 2008-2009 AWARD WINNERS
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University athletics
department held their annual end of the year athletics banquet on
Monday evening. The end of the year event is held to honor all Pace
University athletes, and to pay tribute to the departing seniors.
The climax of the evening is when the University hands out the six major awards that reward people, and athletes, in all facets of Pace University athletics. The six awards are the Honorary Letterwinner, Award of Valor, Merit Medal, Female Athlete of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year, and the Darrell Halloran Memorial Letterwinner of the Year.
The Honorary Letterwinner award is presented to an individual outside the athletics department who contributed to the athletics department in an exemplary manner. The winner of the award this year was Dean Lisa Bardill-Moscaritolo who is the Dean of Students at Pace University.
The next award is the Award of Valor this award is presented to an athlete who overcame an injury or disability and gave a superb extra effort to perform higher than expectations. This award this year went to linebacker Brian Schuster (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) who fought through numerous injuries during the year to have an excellent season for the Pace football program.
The third major award is the Merit Award which goes to a student athlete who combines excellence on the field with quality in the classroom. Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper), from the softball team, took home this award. She has been the ace of the Setters pitching staff all four years she has at the university, and will go down as one of the best pitchers to ever take the mound in Pace history. She was named to the Second Team All NE-10 this season with a 3.62 GPA as Psychology Major.
The next major award given out on the evening was the Female Athlete of the Year. This award goes to a female athlete for outstanding athletic performance. The person you consider can be from any class (Fr., So., Jr., Sr.) and should be one who best exemplifies the Pace University spirit on and off the playing area. This award, for the second year in a row, was taken home by women's tennis star Natalija Subotic (Bradenton, FL/Edison Academic). She has dominated her sport over the last three seasons, losing only three matches over that time. This season, she posted a 9-1 overall record at the number one singles spot, earning her Second Team All NE-10 honors for the season. She as a career singles record of 49-5 which is good enough for 11th best all-time at Pace for most singles victories in a career. She was named the NE-10 Freshman of the Year in 2006, and Player of the Year in 2008.
The fifth major award was the Male Athlete of the Year which goes to a male athlete for outstanding athletic performance. The person you consider can be from any class (Fr., So., Jr., Sr.) and should be one who best exemplifies the Pace University spirit on and off the playing area. Football player Lee Robinson (New Milford, CT/New Milford) took home this honor as he was named to back-to-back NE-10 First Team All-Defensive selections in the last two seasons. He was also honored as a 2008 ECAC All-Star selection, and he was a 2007 All-Region selection. Robinson finished the 2008 season leading the team in tackles with 77, which was 9th best in the NE-10, and he also led the team, and the NE-10, in forced fumbles with four.
The last, and most prestigious, major award of the evening handed out was the Darrell Halloran Memorial Letterwinner of the Year. This award goes to a senior who contributed the most to Pace University and the Athletics Department through athletic and scholastic achievement, leadership and team spirit. The 2009 Halloran Award went to senior softball player Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet). Hurley finished the season tied for 4th place for most hits in the NE-10 with 56, and finished tied for 2nd in the NE-10 for most runs batted in with 36. She will finish her career 7th all-time at Pace in career hits with 172, and 8th all-time in career RBI's with 92.
Pace had 49 senior athletes in the 2008-2009 athletic season. Football had the most senior athletes with 10, while the baseball team had the second most senior athletes with seven.
