CAWLEY AND CORBETT NAMED TO FIRST TEAM
KING NAMED TO SECOND TEAM
EASTON, MA - Pace University senior's catcher Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) and starting pitcher Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) have both been named to the 2008 American Baseball Coaches of America (ABCA)/Rawlings Division II Northeast Region First Team. The classmates also garnered All Northeast-10 Conference First Team honors, as well as being named to the 2008 Daktronics Division II All-Northeast Region Second Team. Sophomore relief pitcher MacKenzie King (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional), an All-Conference Second Team selection, was named to the ABCA/Rawlings Northeast Region Second Team.
Cawley, Corbett and King were all instrumental in leading Pace (31-23, 18-12) to its third straight 30-win season, fourth overall in program history. The 31 wins this season are second only to the 34 wins posted by the 2006 squad. The Setters earned the 5th seed in the NE-10 Tournament defeating the 4th seed University of Massachusetts- Lowell in the first round 7-1, before falling to NCAA tournament bound #1 seed Bryant University and #2 seed Southern Connecticut State University, 4-3 and 6-1, respectively, in the double elimination round of the tournament.
Cawley, the 2008 Pace Male Athlete of the Year, had a standout senior campaign starting in all 54 games this season for Pace, topping the team in batting average (.333), slugging percentage (.486), on base percentage (.422), hits (70), RBI (41), runs scored (39), home runs (6), total bases (102), walks (31) and stolen bases (20). In the NE-10, Cawley ranked eighth in on base percentage, tied for seventh in hits, RBI and homeruns, tied for 10th in doubles, 10th in total bases, seventh in walks and tied for fifth in stolen bases. Cawley ends his stellar four year career ranked third all-time at Pace in hits (221), fifth all-time in doubles (43), tied for eighth in triples (6), 11th in RBI (113), ninth in runs scored (135), seventh in walks (83) and fourth in stolen bases (72).
Corbett was a workhorse this season for the Setters making a team-high 12 starts posting a 7-3 record with a 1.20 ERA in 82.1 innings pitched, to go along with a pair of complete games and a shutout. He struck out 76 batters on the year and held opposing hitters to a .185 batting average. Corbett bested the team in wins, ERA and innings pitched. In the NE-10, Corbett ranked second in ERA, fifth in opposing batter average and innings pitched, seventh in strikeouts, tied for seventh in wins and tied for fourth in games started. Corbett leaves Pleasantville ranked first all-time in school history in innings pitched (240.0) and strikeouts (199), while ranking second all-time in career victories (19) and eighth all-time in ERA (3.00).
King posted a team-best 80 strikeouts this season, tying him for
fifth in the NE-10. In 52.2 innings pitched this season, King
posted a 3-3 record and three saves with a 1.88 ERA. Making 22
appearances on the year, two starts, King held opposing batters to
a .174 average. In just two seasons at Pace, King has posted an 8-5
record and five saves with a 1.70 ERA, striking out 123 batters in
just 84.2 innings pitched.
