John Tice enters his third season as the Setters' offensive
line coach and co-offensive coordinator.
A 10-year National Football League veteran, Tice was a third-round
choice of the Saints in the 1983 NFL Draft. He played in 134 games
at tight end during his professional career and drew 56 starts.
Tice retired from the National Football League in 1992 due to a
serious shoulder injury. At that time, he ranked ninth on the
Saints’ career receptions list (158) and 11th on New
Orleans’ games played chart (134). He closed his professional
career with 1,602 receiving yards and 15 touchdown
receptions.
From 1985 through 1991, Tice missed only three contests. During a
four-year stretch from 1985 to 1988, he caught 103 passes for 1,074
yards and 12 touchdowns. He enjoyed his finest season in 1986 when
he registered a career-high 37 receptions for a career-best 330
yards. He registered another career standard the following year
when he pulled down six touchdown receptions.
At the conclusion of his playing days, the Central Islip, N.Y.,
native entered the private business sector and served as a
volunteer football coach for several high schools in Florida.
He joined the coaching staff of the Minnesota Vikings in 1999 as an
offensive assistant before adding duties as the club’s tight
ends coach in 2000. In all, he spent seven years on
Minnesota’s coaching staff. From 2002-05, he served under his
brother Mike, who was the Vikings’ head coach. In
2009, Tice was the Offensive Line Coach for the New York
Sentinals of the UFL.
A 1983 graduate of the University of Maryland, Tice earned
Honorable Mention All-America honors as a senior by both the
Associated Press and The Sporting News. He ranked as the
Terrapins’ leading receiver during each of his final two
seasons and played under then-Maryland Head Coach Bobby Ross as a
senior.
Tice resides in West Point with his wife, Barbara, and children:
John-Eric, Alexis, Michael, and twins, Carly and Clayton.
