SOFTBALL POSTS BACK-TO-BACK
SWEEPS; TAKE TWO FROM PENMEN
SETTERS WIN FOURTH IN A ROW AND SIX OUT OF LAST SEVEN
BRIARCLIFF, NY - Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) went 5-for-5 with six runs scored in the doubleheader as the Pace softball team continued their drive towards a berth in the conference tournament, sweeping the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University, winning 7-3 in game one and completing the sweep with a 3-1 win in the nightcap. The Setters have won four in a row and six of the last seven games as they improve to 26-18 overall and 14-12 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen drop to 15-20 and 11-13 in conference play.
The Penmen got the first run of the game as a two-out error by the Setters opened the door for Southern New Hampshire. The Penmen loaded the bases on back-to-back singles and a walk forced in the first run of the game. The Setters knotted the score at one as Pane led off with a triple and scored on a single by Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet).
The Penmen would retake the lead in the fourth as a leadoff solo homerun by Andrea Clausi (Kingston, NY) accounted for the first run. The second run came home on back-to-back doubles by Ashley Guertin (Manchester, NH) and Elena Anderson (Salem, WI) for a 3-1 Penmen lead.
The Setters again came right back in the bottom half of the frame, scoring five runs in the inning. Pace loaded the bases and scored their first run on a wild pitch. Pane drew a bases loaded walk to tied the game at three. Hurley gave the Setters the lead with a two run single to right center. Allutto's reached on an error, allowing the fifth and final run of the inning to cross the plate. Pace tacked on insurance run in the sixth as Pane blasted a solo homerun to right center.
On the mound, Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) tossed a complete game, scattering eight hits and struck out two, while allowing three runs (two earned), to improve to 12-8 on the season.
In the nightcap Pane got the offense going again, as she drew a walk to start the bottom of the first. Pane moved to third on a sac bunt, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Trish Allutto (Matawan, NJ/Matawan). The Penmen would tie the score at one in the second but the Setters rallied in the third as Pane once again was the catalyst. Pane led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on an Alton Frisbie (Indian Hills, CO/Conifer) base hit. In the fifth, Pane doubled with two outs and scored her third run of the game on a Hurley single.
On the hill, Christina Rescigno (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel Academy) went the first four innings, allowing one run on three hits and struck out two, to improve to 7-6 on the season. Alicia Parlon (Norton, MA/Norton) tossed the final three innings, allowing two hits, and struck out two to earn her first collegiate save.
The Setters return to action on Sunday, April 27 when they will
host Bentley College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader for
the Setters regular season finale and Senior Day at 12:00 pm on
Pace's Briarcliff campus.
