Entering her 19th season at the helm for the Setters, Head Coach
Carrie Seymour is coming off a 2009-10 season that saw the Setters
post a 22-8 overall record and finish second in the
Northeast-10 with a 18-4 record in conference play. The Setters
were able to clinch a spot in the 2010 NCAA Tournament as an
at-large bid. Pace’s 2009-10 season ended with a loss to
Molloy College in the opening round of the East Regionals for the
NCAA Tournament.
Seymour was rewarded for her efforts in the 2009-10 season by being named the NIT/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division II Coach of the Year. It was the sixth time Seymour was given this honor while at Pace, as she also received the honor following the 1995-96, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
Seymour enters the year as Pace’s all-time victory leader with 341.
In 18 years, Seymour has averaged 19 wins per season since
beginning in 1992. On January 26, 2002, Seymour reached the
200-win mark with an 81-70 victory over Merrimack. To date,
she is the fourth-fastest Division II women’s basketball
coach to reach 100 victories, accomplishing the feat in 127 games.
On February 23, 2008 against Le Moyne, she earned her 300th victory
of her illustrious career.
Well known for her ability to recruit quality student-athletes who
graduate and go on to establish successful careers, Seymour has
guided her teams to eleven postseason appearances. The Setters have
participated in eight NCAA Tournaments, highlighted by a trip to
the Division II Elite Eight in 2000-01 and the Sweet Sixteen in
1993-94. Pace has also won three Eastern Collegiate Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Division II championships in 1993, 1996 and 1997.
Coach Seymour has been recognized regionally and nationally for her
efforts, winning numerous coaching awards. She earned the New
York Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award
following the 1993-94 season, is a two-time WBCA District Coach of
the Year (1993-94 and 1999-00).
One of the main constants of Seymour’s Pace teams has been
defense. The Setters have ranked among the top 10 teams nationally
in defensive field goal percentage and scoring defense in five of
the past 14 seasons, leading the nation in defensive field goal
percentage in 1993, 1994 and 1997. Seymour’s 2000-01
squad finished 12th in defensive field goal percentage and 16th in
scoring defense. The Setters led the nation in both
categories in 1993-94 and possess the second-best all-time
defensive field goal percentage among Division II schools when they
held opponents to a .308 shooting percentage in 1993-94.
Before coming to Pace, she began coaching at Eastern Connecticut
State University where she was an assistant for a year. She then
took on one-year stints as an assistant at Marist College and the
College of the Holy Cross, before working the sidelines at St.
John’s University for six seasons. She arrived on the Pace
campus in 1992 and the Setters teams have thrived ever since,
posting nine 20-win seasons.
Seymour attended Eastern Connecticut State University where she was
an all-star as a player. In 1983, she received her B.A. in
Psychology with minors in Physical Education and Coaching. She
earned her Master’s Degree in Education from St. John’s
University in 1993.
Seymour is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches
Association (WBCA) and is a national chairperson on the Division II
State Farm All-American Committee. She has previously served
on the Division II IKON/WBCA Coach of the Year Committee and the
Coaching Women’s Basketball Magazine editorial board.
